A beautiful skating dress is a must for any competition even if it is just a little local competition. The more beautiful you feel while skating the better the performance. If you are skating in rags you will feel inferior. If you skate in a wonderful dress, you will feel like a million dollars and skate accordingly.

There is a very easy way to make an ordinary skating dress into one that feels a million dollars. Add a few sequins or rhinestones. It really is very easy to do and can make a real difference.

Just buy a few Swarovski rhinestones from your on-line rhinestone shop and attach them to your plain dress using a hot fix applicator. Or you can get iron on rhinestone appliqués which are just as easy to use.

Even just a little satin trim can make a big difference. Do not feel like the poor cousin any more. Feel like a film star.

Ice Hockey For Beginners

For those  who know absolutely nothing about ice hockey here is some information on the most exciting game played on ice!

The Micmac Indians played a sport very similar to hockey in Nova Scotia during the 1800’s. This forerunner to modern ice hockey included influences of an earlier game the Irish called hurling; which included using a hurley stick and a block made of wood.
British soldiers along with the Scottish and Irish immigrants brought ice hockey to Canada. The game play was made of elements from Indian lacrosse and field hockey played in England. Early ice hockey games allowed up to 30 players on a side at one time.

Ice hockey is believed to have been first played in the USA in 1893,

Each team is made up of five players and one goaltender. The object of ice hockey is to score more goals than the opposing team. Goals are scored by putting the puck (a hard disk of vulcanized rubber used in a similar way to a ball in other games) in the opponents net. The goaltender is in place to try and stop this from happening.

The ice is divided into three equal areas divided by blue lines.  The game lasts for sixty minutes, broken into 3 twenty-minute periods. The clock may stop any number of times due to infractions and penalties and then re-start when everything is suitable again for the game to continue.

Here are a few examples of the very interesting terminology used in this game:

Off Side:  When the players are skating towards the other team’s net, the players cannot cross the blue line ahead of the puck.

Biscuit: Another name for the puck.

Coast to Coast:  To skate the puck from one end to the other without being stopped.

Face Off:  The referee drops the puck between two players who face off to gain control of the puck.

Penalty Kill:  As a result of a penalty, the penalized player must sit in the penalty box for a designated length of time. The team will have to continue playing without the aid of that player.  If they get through this time without the opponents scoring that is call a Penalty kill.

Short Handed: When your team is down players e.g. one has been penalised as above.

Break Out:  When the players are trying to get the puck out of their own defensive zone.

Hat Trick:  When one player scores three goals in one game.

Breakaway: When one player is skating the puck towards the goalie with no-one near him to stop him attempting to score.

Cherry Picking:  This is when a player is hanging around the other team’s goalie.

Screen:  When the goalie cannot see the player shooting the puck because other players are in the way.

Dyna-Mite Future Ranger Hockey Doll
Dyna-Mite Future Ranger Hockey Doll

Stoned: When the goalie manages to stop the puck going into the net.

Goon: A player that is quick to fight and known to receive many penalties.

Hopefully these terms will help you to understand the game a little bit better and therefore enjoy it more.

What Do Professional Ice Skaters Have In Common?

Professional ice-skaters are lithe and seem to glide effortless across the ice. For someone who has never figure skated before this can be deceiving. Ice skating takes technique, strength, energy and grace, some of which can be taught and learned. However to become a professional ice-skater these qualities have to be mastered and this takes unwavering dedication from the skaters and their support group. There are however other subtle qualities that professional skaters have in common.

Start Young

Ice skaters start young, very young. Female skaters start while in the toddler years and male skaters on average start at little later. The demands on the body of an ice skater are extraordinarily high, both physically and mentally. Starting young enables an individual to grow into the sport, train the right muscles and gain a lifetime of understanding of the principles involved.

Dedicated Support Group

To become a professional ice skating an individual needs support physically, emotionally and financially. If a professional ice-skater starts young, with only family backing, the tab may be at least 40,000 USD per year.  Behind most successful professional ice skaters is a dedicated family who made sacrifices to see their child or sibling achieve their goals.

Dedication

Ice skating requires a lot of dedication. It requires constant practice to master new skills and techniques. A professional ice skater has to understand that training can be grueling and requires at least 7 hours a day on the ice practicing. Most ice skaters know that if they stick to the program it will pay off some day.

Professional Coaches

Behind every successful professional ice skater is a successful professional coach. Most of the coaches have trained Olympic ice skaters and have a history of success. Ice skaters usually hook up with these coaches while they are still young and stay with them into successful careers as professional ice skaters.

Successful Competitive Ice Skating Career

Professional ice skaters were able to achieve success with consistent high marks at all levels of competition.  These successes were what made them get noticed and invited to the competitions and shows.   This is what leads to sponsorship and ultimtely to lucrative professional contracts.

It seems that starting young with the support of parents or a dedicated coach can start a young child onto the road to being a successful professional ice skater. Michael Weiss a professional ice skater started skating when he was 9 years old.  His immediate family was very supportive, making many sacrifices as he rose in the ranks in the ice skater’s world. Among his amateur accomplishments include some World Championship Medals, US Figure skating titles and being a member of the US Olympic team. Kimmie Miessner is another example of a professional ice skater. She was only 6 years old when she first started skating.  Kimmie’s resume includes impressive accomplishments and wins. She has won medals in international competitions that include the Olympic Games and the World Championships. She also acknowledges her parents role in her success.  Her parents took her to all her practices and meets while she was growing up.

Professional Skating on Ice

Figure skaters are able to dazzle the audience with their elegance, athleticism and grace when they perform their routines on ice. When people go to see the professional skating shows it is easy to forget how hard these elite skaters have had to work in order to earn a spot with a touring company.

There are many young ice skating students practicing at this very moment. They train and work hard so that they will one day be chosen to compete in a national competition. Winning a major skating event is just one of the goals for any serious skater. The top prize that they all dream about is to be selected to compete in the Olympics. The talented few who make it to the world championships are asked to join the touring skating shows and perform as a professional ice skater.

The Ice Skating Tours are events that let these athletes shine and they can perform the routines of their choice. This means that the audiences are treated to some remarkable performances by the top ice skaters in the world.  The atmosphere is always bristling with excitement and the energy level is so high that it seems to take on a life all its own. There are always plenty of top figure skaters on the program and the costumes, lighting, music and routines are spectacular. Individuals will have their spotlight moments but the skaters perform as teams as well. Because the skaters are now professional performers there are no rules that restrict how the dances and on ice exhibitions need to be handled. These champions can now dazzle the crowds with some truly amazing gymnastics and acrobatics that are not allowed in amateur events, not even the Olympics.

Skaters have many different paths that they take to become a champion. They have to be committed and passionate about training and practice. In many instances, families have to juggle huge costs in order to give a talented child the coaching and equipment necessary to become a top skater.

Ice skaters give up much of their free time and personal life in order to achieve their dream of becoming one of the elite performers on ice. It is common for a middle school or high school student to train before school, after school and on weekends. The intensity of the training is so high that even when skaters have sniffles, colds or muscle strains they will still head out for as long a practice session as possible. They are aware of the high stakes that are involved and they know how fierce the competition is. The desire to become a champion and a professional skater keeps these individuals eager to get out every day and practice on ice.

To qualify as a top skating star an individual must prove themselves by winning one or more medals in the top major championships. Among the professionals that have earned the right to perform with one of the figure skating shows are some of the most famous faces of past Winter Olympics.

Oksana Baiul is only one of the Olympians that can be seen on tour. She became a top champion although she had to overcome many problems including being orphaned at an early age. Oksana has been the 93 World Champion and won an Olympic gold medal in 94. One of her most endearing performances is an interpretation of “Swan Lake”.

Elena Bechke is another top Olympian who tours professionally. She and her partner Denis Petrov won a silver medal in the 92 Olympics and then won the World Pro Championship in 96.

Elena Berezhnaya is another professional skater who can be seen performing with Anton Sikharulidze. These two won the 02 gold at the Winter Olympics and have captured 2 World Championships and 4 Russian Championships. Elena’s head was gashed when she was hit be a skate blade years earlier, but she fought back and regained her championship form. The routines by Berezhnaya and Sikharulidze are known for beauty, artistry and intense emotion.

Renee Roca and Gorsha Sur are ice dancers who have won the US National championships twice and claimed the World title in 97. Shortly before one competition, they were disqualified from the 94 Olympics due to a misunderstanding. Some athletes may have let this disappointment turn them against skating but not this amazing duo. They continued to skate and perform and their ice dancing is always a delight to audiences around the world.

Elvis Stojko is a Canadian who has been called the King of Quads. Stojko has the ability to perform the difficult quad multiple times in one single competition. He has always been one of the most exciting of all skaters to watch on the ice and his incredible feats of athleticism have astonished both audiences and judges. This figure skater won the Canadian Championship 7 times, the World Championship 3 times and has 2 Olympic silver medals.

Sarah Hughes won gold in the 02 Olympics with a come from behind victory that surprised the world. This great skating star also owns a US silver and a bronze medal that she claimed in the World Championships.

There is something magical about watching figure skating.  On ice skaters are truly beautiful and graceful beings capable of achieving amazing feats of physical strength and skill.  So how do you become a professional skater?

Well, it will take quite a bit of hard work to excel in figure skating.  You need to prepare yourself for strenuous and long practices as well as the personal drive to push through the obstacles that are certain to pop up.

The first thing to do is to start taking lessons as early as you possibly can.  Many figure skaters who pursue Olympic careers have been taking lessons since they were quite young.  Group skating lessons are an excellent place to start.  This will be a good environment to learn the basic skills that you need on ice.

Once you have really started to excel in your skating prowess you will want to look into obtaining a “Basic Skills Membership in U.S. Figure Skating.”  This membership actually opens up the opportunity for you to participate in skating shows.  Participation in shows like this are great learning experience for you to test your skating skills both mentally and physically.

After you have progressed past the basic skills on ice you will need to pursue individual coaching.  This is where you will really get the attention and instruction that you need to boost up your figure skating skills so that you will be competitive in the field.

From there you will want to join a club that has been sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating.  By joining a club like this you will eventually be able to achieve a full membership to the U.S. Figure Skating association.  This opens the door for you to take on the basic skills tests that you need to pass to be able to participate in the truly competitive skating competitions.

You will also want to work on a cross training program with your coach to ensure that you are as physically fit and healthy as possible.  This will make you more resilient and pliable as an athlete.  With heightened health and strength you will be able to skate better for longer periods of time which will make you a more fearsome competitor.

Once you have passed the necessary skill tests you are ready to begin competing in qualifying and non-qualifying events.  For these you will be competing at a senior level, and your goal is to place within the top four in your region.  From there you will passed on to Sectionals, and your goal there is to place in the top four as well.  If you manage that impressive feat you will be able to participate in the U.S. Nationals so that you can pursue the position of U.S. National Champion.  From there, if you place adequately you will possibly have the opportunity to pursue your Olympic dreams.

The road to becoming a figure skater on a national level is not an easy road, but with dedication and drive you can make a go of it.  Who knows what you will be able to achieve?

Ice Skating Dresses – Choosing The Right Ones

Ice skating dresses add a great deal to a skater’s performance and this is why so much time and care is given to choosing the right one. Some top skaters may spend months checking through the different selections that are available before finally making their choice. These ice skating dresses can be made from jersey, mesh, velvet and other materials, but the cut and design will always emphasize grace and elegance.

A good skating outfit can make the difference in how well they skate and certainly plays a part in the overall impression that the individual makes on both judges and spectators. For these reasons it is very important to make sure that the overall color, pattern and style complements the performer as well as the performance that they have planned. These dresses do not have to be highly ornate to impress a crowd but they must be well suited to the individual.

The correct color is a big concern for many skaters when it comes time to match an outfit to an event. There are many ice skating dresses that are available and the color selection is outstanding, but the color, style, and design must all be carefully balanced. The color of the material must not dominate the complexion of the skater because this could make them appear too pale and detract from the skating performance. Skaters still need to select a color that is bold enough to make sure that they are the focal point of viewers while they are on the ice.

The type of material that is used is also something that takes a lot of thought and care. An outfit must enhance the performance and accentuate the movements that the skater will be doing. Ice skating dresses are meant to flow and move in the same way as dance outfits. Skaters are doing leaps, twirls and spiraled twists and they cannot have outfits that bind or hamper the movement of legs or arms.

When skaters are being judged on the ice they also are being given points on how well they project their look. The ice skating dresses that are used for a freestyle segment are not the same as those used by skaters who are performing a longer, artistic program. The dresses that are chosen for the long programs are often extremely elegant and very often there are Swarovski crystals that cover much of the outfit and add wonderful sparkle to the design.

Skates – Choosing The Best For You

Perhaps you have seen those figure skaters on TV, wondering just what it is that makes them look so at ease on the ice. If you have considered trying your feet at skating, one of the most important considerations is exactly what type of skates you wear. While you, of course, won’t gracefully glide across the ice on your first attempt, having a well fitting pair of ice skates will make the learning process much more enjoyable.

Don’t be left wondering what to do. You are not resigned to the rental skates every time you go for lessons. Having your own custom pair of ice skates will exponentially increase your skating pleasure. While available from a sporting goods store, it is best to go to a store that specializes in fitting individuals for ice hockey skates or figure skates.

www.NewSkates.com

Beginners to recreational skating may want to consider Jackson, one of the more popular brands. While not good for figure skates, these boots are good for someone who wants to skate purely for pleasure. Expect to pay between $50 - $100 for a pair of these boots, depending on the extras. This is not that expensive when you consider that figure skates are much more specialized than tennis shoes, and this cost is almost less than a good pair of tennis shoes.

When speaking with a professional, this person can advise you not only on size and fit, but can make recommendations based on your height and weight. All of these things factor into a good fit from your skates.

Once you own your own pair of skates, you can depend on the same “feel” every time you skate. When renting skates, you don’t have any way to know if they are strong enough to support your foot, whether the blades are sharp, or who’s foot has been in it. Without knowing how much a boot has been used, you can’t very well assure your safety.

As an owner of your own figure skates, you can learn how to take care of them and provide maintenance to get the most wear. Establishing a relationship with a good provider of skating products can also help you find other ways to enhance your experience.

Who knows where your skating will take you? Maybe one day you’ll try your hand at ice hockey with the family, and then you might need to seek out some ice hockey skates. Perhaps you will become skilled as a graceful figure skater, maybe ice-racing will be your specialty.

Whatever you decide on trying, having the best pair of skates is like putting on your favorite pair of jeans. It just feels right, and you will want to wear them again and again.

Ice Skates – Which Are Best For You?

If you want to buy ice skates it would really be advisable to physically go into a specialist store and try them on in the store. It is very hard to get the exact fit and comfortability online.

There are so many things that determine which skates you should purchase. Your height and weight, whether they are to be used for figure skating, ice hockey, speed skating or whatever, the level of expertise you have, the amount of money you have available to spend, the colour, the shape, the material they are made of etc. So many variables to consider.

Even if you know the brand and style you want, all boots are not made equal. One pair of size 10’s is not necessarily the same as another pair of size 10’s from the same manufacturer. Although they probably come from the same cutting machine and are sewn the same way, or if they are plastic or acrylic then they could be moulded the same, there is often a slight difference between two pairs that could be all the difference between a comfortable and successful sport or not.

A beginner would definitely not wear the same skates as a professional. A person weighing 180 pounds would not wear the same skates as another weighing 250 pounds. The runners, or blades, that are the part that touches the ice, are also such a variable that it is nearly impossible to tell you the differences on one page.

Silver Skates Or Were They Gold?

A couple of years ago I tried to buy a book from eBay that I remembered from my childhood. I asked eBay to keep an eye out for it and let me know if it became available. The book was called The Golden Skates so the keyword I asked eBay for was “golden skates”. For the next two years I continually got told by eBay about babies bibs that had golden skates on them, mugs with figures of girls skating, and all sort of other items totally unrelated to the book I was looking for. In the end I told eBay to stop looking. It was a waste of time. Obviously the book was out of print and unavailable.

Then one day, I cannot remember how, but I found a reference to:
Hans Brinker and The Silver Skates
.

Well, that was it. Silver not Gold. No wonder I could not find it on eBay or Amazon. I immediately purchased the book written by Mary Mapes Dodge and loved every minute of reading it. It was slightly different to how I remembered it but I enjoyed it all the same. I had also, in my mind, joined it up with the story of the little Dutch boy who put his finger in the dyke to stop it breaking. Obviously that is another story but also set in Holland.

Hans Brinker; Or, The Silver Skates

Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates is about a brother and sister who cannot afford to buy proper skates but instead skate on old hand made wooden skates. They enter a competition to win some silver skates. The story unfolds of the race and the obstacles that have to be overcome to win it.

This story inspired me, when I was little, to take up roller skating but I never got to try ice skating until I was about 30 years old. By then, of course, I was much too old to be a competition ice skater but I have always loved the beauty and symmetry of ice skating. Now that I am over 60 perhaps I need to listen to the audio book and relive the delight of the story.

Dresses for wearing while figure skating are many and varied. Depending on which style of performance you are aiming for and whether it is a competition or just for practice. Whether it be T-shirts and tights or a glamorous fully sequinned master piece specially designed just for you we can help find you just the right outfit.

If you are just going to be mucking around with your friends on the ice you need something very casual. A T-shirt and lycra tights will be the most comfortable but you want to look good too so look around for a T-shirt just a little bit special and tights that hug your body to perfection. Of course color is a definite consideration. Which color suits your skin type the best? Does black make your skin look too pastey? Is red too bright for your personality? There are so many varieties of blues and greens that there has to be just the right one for you. Or maybe you are like me and would want purple.

Color, of course comes into the choice of costume for that special competition too. You really want to look your best so that hopefully the judges will think highly of you. I know that what you wear should not have any bearing on how they rate you, but believe me, impressions do count too. If you are dressed terribly the judge may not be able to see past the outfit and may not be able to appreciate your skating to its full potential.

Choice of material is also a consideration. Soft filmy silk or wonderful stretch velvet. With or without sequins, crystals and rhinestones. Maybe the tie-dyed look is what you want. Should the skirt be plain, petalled, or have a scalloped edge, be beaded, have a net film over the top or be made entirely of net? Maybe beaded lace, or a material that has been color faded to give the varied look? Really, the choice is completely yours. The boundaries are limited only by your imagination.
